Remember Amazon Lists?

I know, I know, I’ve been a super bag music blogger. Before I bombard you with excuses about how I just moved into an apt and I have no time I won’t bother. The truth is this blog has been hard for me to get a rhythm to. While I was searching around and weeding through my Amazon cart last night, I found my old public lists that I used to make for fun. I thought that this would be a good time to link you to those just to show how much my music taste really hasn’t changed in the last 10 years.

Still don’t know if that is a good thing or not.

Here is my list for music when it is raining out:

Here is my Summer of ’04 music mix.

Hope you guys enjoy that little trip down memory lane…

Until the next time.

Emo for the Bros…

photo: Vertical Horizon

Just about a half and hour ago my roommate was blasting a bunch of late 90s/ early 00s modern rock that really brought me back to the days where VH1 was still for your mother and there was actually a top 10 countdown you looked forward to watching.  Bands in the vein of Eve 6, Augustana, The Script (in later years), Goo Goo Dolls, and New Radicals.

This was the music that bros still found it “okay” to cry to in their dorm rooms alone. Enjoy this visual playlist of sorts. Cause I am.

yep its a sappy Friday night..

You Wanna Work Together? The Art of the Collaboration.

One of the greatest inventions in my lifetime has been the art of  collaboration. When Run DMC first collaborated with Aerosmith in the 80s it paved the way for other artists the next three decades. I have compiled a list of my favorites in no particular order. I hope you enjoy and tell me some of yours too!

Moby ft. Gwen Stefani- Southside

This isn’t the first time Gwen Stefani will appear on this list but this is certainly the best way to start out the pack. I loved Moby in high school and when I heard that my one of my favorite girl fronted bands was going to be doing guest vocals I flipped. You will too.

Temple of the Dog- Hunger Strike

If you know me personally then you will know that this is still my go to song when it comes to karaoke. While this may not be a technical collaboration this band includes members of Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, and Mother Love Bone so in this grunge royalty hit, it makes the grade.

Bjork and Thom Yorke- I’ve Seen It All

This song from the “Dancer in the Dark” soundtrack leaves me breathless every time I hear it. Can it get any better than Bjork and Thom Yorke, really?

Jenny and Johnny- Scissor Runner

When Jenny Lewis collabs with anyone I’m sure to like it. That’s definitely the case with her and Jonathan Rice for this record. Not only did they come up with a great song but the entire album is pure surf pop gold.

Bob Dylan, Mumford &Sons, and the Avett Brothers- 2011 Grammy Performance

I know that this isn’t a recorded song but this performance gives me chills to this day.

Babyshambles feat. Kate Moss-La belle et la bête

It’s Pete Doherty and Kate Moss. I’m drooling over the video here…

Say Anything ft. Haley Williams- The Church Channel

Hayley Williams voice is one that comes along once in a generation. She has many of the qualities that Gwen Stefani has and I like to think of her as a protege of rock royalty. Her voice sounds incredible in this track.

Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj- Up Out My Face

Yeah, I listen to pop music. This song has been one of my most played on my iPod for over a year. I think you know why.

I guess I can continue this list another time but this is a pretty good start on it..

What are your favorite collabs?

Ambience…with Owen

I love when I associate certain friends with certain bands. For example I always equate Rilo Kiley with my friend, Charlie. So, for this post I decided to write about one of my favorite artists, Owen.

Owen is actually Mike Kinsella, he hails from the famous Kinsella family; brother Tim Kinsella has been in numerous bands throughout the indie scene. Such as, Joan of Arc and Cap’n Jazz. Anywhoo, my friend from college Chris introduced me to his EP. From then I was hooked. Over the years I lived in Long Island and New York City I had the opportunity to see him and it has been one of the best shows that I’ve been to ever. All of his music reminds me of a different time in my life where I met some of my greatest and oldest friends.

Owen you bring me back…and I love it.

The Libertines.

Yesterday while I was cruising around the PCH I was listening to my brit pop mix. Featuring music from the Libertines and other such acts from across the pond, it reminded me again of how much that I much I need to move there.

Warm in the Winter

Since working at my new job I have had the pleasure of walking to work. Something few get to experience living in Los Angeles however, it has reminded me of why I loved New York so much. Listening to my music in my headphones while walking around the city makes me feel like I’m listening to the music for the first time and in a whole new way.

For the last few days the new Glass Candy EP has been on heavy rotation. Take a listen..

Video Flashback: Tomorrow by Silverchair

I remember where I was when I first heard ‘Tomorrow” by Silverchair. I was sitting in my room in the 8th grade and listening to the radio (as I often did) and I freaked out. Even more exciting was that they were 15 when they recorded their debut album, Frogstomp. Hailing from down under Daniel Johns and the crew proved that they were not just one hit wonders, releasing several stellar albums throughout the 90s and 00s.

Check out how they got their start…

Notes Fave: Stereophonics

I’m always torn when I use the word “favorite” when it comes to music. I have so many favorites from Nirvana to Nicki Minaj. While alternative rock will always be my favorite genre, there is something about brit pop that makes me think of all these amazing memories from when I was a teenager.

My best friend is from England and when she made me a tape of the first Stereophonics album, Word Gets Around I was instantly hooked. When they released their second album, Performance and Cocktails they really started to gain momentum. They have always been a fixture on the music scene in their native U.K. but this time America started to take notice. Since then they have released several albums all of which should be on your radar at this very moment.

The Streets: Weak Become Heroes and the Stars Align

One of the greatest things about music is its ability to transport and create a scene only you see in your head. When I first heard The Streets I felt I was taken into Mike Skinner’s world of two step and garage beats laced with his British accent. On his debut album, “Original Pirate Material” he shows a new world that is brought to life spoken through him. My favorite track on the album is “Weak Become Heroes” because of its beat around the piano and his vocals.

Take a listen…

Bruise Violet…

When I first heard Babes in Toyland I was a freshman in high school. This senior had given me a tape of all these Nirvana bootleg albums along with some other bands that he thought I would like. Bruise Violet was one of the first songs I heard from the band and I fell in love. The angry passionate screams of the girls fronting the band made me realize that it was ok to be 14 and angry at the world…Not to mention their fashion sense was out of this world.
